Hosting | The Only Long Weekend Party Checklist You’ll Need

With another long weekend quickly approaching, Memorial Day in the US and Victoria Day here in Canada, I figured it was a great time to put together your party checklist. I know how stressful it can be to plan a party, so in order to make it rewarding, here are my quick tips for being the perfect host.

Kick Off The Party With A Few Delicious Dips

You can’t go wrong with a few quality dips and / or spreads (these can even be store-bought). It’ll allow your guests to have a little nosh whilst sipping a pre-dinner cocktail, and allow for you to do last minute preparations to the main attraction. Here are some of my favourites;

Keep Your Guest Entertained

Whether your guests would rather a fancy hammock, some fun Spanish guitar looping on Apple Music, or a few games of Boules (Bocce for those who don’t have a southern French boyfriend) – having good entertainment is key to having a memorable soirée! Here are some of my favourites;

Get Cookin’

Outdoor, al fresco parties are always the best. I’m a BIG fan of day time festivities – it allows me to get to have everyone out by dinner time and gives me lots of time to clean up, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Getting out the good-ole-charcoal BBQ is key. Our favourite is Paella (pictured). It feeds a crowd, and is a pretty great attraction. Here are a few other favourites;

  • Burgers are a great idea!
  • You can never go wrong with tacos! Here and here
  • Don’t worry, the Paella recipe will come soon… 🙂

Make Sure Your Tablescape Is As Stylish As You Are

Now that your main offering is in the works, it’s time to get that table and ambiance together, if you haven’t already. In truth, this is my first thing of the day – it’s sets the mood. The ultimate goal is that your table complements the theme of the day. In the case of these photos, Spanish was key. Here are some other favourites;

  • Casual and vibrant, here
  • Pretty and colourful, here

Ensure The Cocktails Are Serve-Yourself

One of the best decisions we made was purchasing these aluminum washing basins. It allows the drinks to be chilled and easy to access. Opt to get two, and keep one for the empties. It is a great time-saver during clean-up! A good selection is key – an easy-to-mix cocktail, a couple bottles of wine, and a few types of beer is a great start.

Clean Up As You Go

Make sure your dishwasher is empty. After each meal, clean the plates, and pop them in the dishwasher. As soon as the dishwasher is full, put it on, and continue as necessary. That second washing basin is a great helper to clean-as-you-go.

Now you can look forward to and be proud of your long weekend soirée. You’ll enjoy everyone’s company, and have as much of a relaxing time as possible!
