Hola Mis Amores!
How’s 2017 treating you so far? About a week in, and I’m feeling pretty good about it, but I do know many friends of mine are already stressed. I’ve never been a big proponent of New Years “Resolutions” – I mean they always seem like something breakable, because they are always way to difficult to achieve. Your natural tendencies are just that, natural – why introduce something completely UN-natural into your life? For me, that just throws my entire equilibrium off kilter, and then I become a nasty b****.
I do like to set motivating goals – something that may better myself. But let’s not be unrealistic and set ourselves up for failure from day one.
So with that in mind, I have come up with some “resolutions” for this coming year that will motivate us to be better people, in whatever aspects we wish to be.
1 A Healthy Lifestyle.
I preach this daily – everything in moderation, including moderation. But don’t make this a “ride or die” type of goal, and thoroughly try to enjoy every aspect of your life. This doesn’t actually mean training for a marathon or working out every day of the week – it really means figuring out that perfect balance, and working on ways to ensure a healthy physical and mental mind. Just relaxing and taking life a little slower may even be the answer for you. A couple extra hours of sleep. A yoga class once a week. Any step in the right direction to realize how much stress you put on your body, and to give it a damn break every so often.
Stop thinking about what others think of you, and your lifestyle choices. What you find successful, may not be what others consider success to be. But who cares? Everyone is different, and it often takes some time to realize that you can never compare yourself to anybody else. Instead, be inspired, be motivated by the ones you admire, and move forward being more positive in knowing that you are that inspirational and motivating person for someone else.
3 Friends & Family.
Be a better friend. This is a big one for me this year. I have such a close knit family, but quite a few changes happened in 2016 that make it so it’s more of a thought-process to ensure we make the time to see each other. I need to be be sure that stays as a priority. And my friends, well, what can I say, we are definitely at that age where more insistence must be made to pull us away from our busy careers and lives. I know I’m more than guilty to just be content with working out, heading home and relaxing; but life is too short to be that boring.
4 Go Forward.
Let’s try new things this year. Take a photography or acting class. Join a choir or beer-league baseball team. I am going to learn Dutch (in fact, I already started yesterday). Something that I have always wanted to do (my mother is, and speaks, Dutch). I realize that you really don’t need to speak Dutch in order to conquer the world, I mean most people in Dutch-speaking countries speak English, but whatever man, it’s something new. And it’s something I want to do. So, I’m going to do it! 🙂
5 Be Positive.
Sure, this could be misconstrued as too vague and broad, but I feel this is another one we must get on board with. I consider myself a really positive person, but I STILL get into funks every so often. And when I feel at my lowest, I want to surround myself with positive people. I’d like to try and be that positive person for someone else this year. To catch myself in a window pane as I walk down the street, and see myself smiling because through the whole grand-scheme of life, I really do have reasons to be positive. And to have an infectious smile.
